About the project

Storage for South Australia, ready to build.

Bungama West BESS is a 200 MW / 400–600 MWh battery energy storage system near Port Pirie. Its 2 to 3 hours of storage can be configured to suit the offtake.

The freehold land, development consent and AEMO Section 5.3.4A clearance are all in place. ElectraNet is positioned to issue an Offer to Connect, ahead of a Transmission Connection Agreement and construction.

How it works

Spare energy, saved for when it counts

South Australia often makes more solar and wind power than it needs in the middle of the day. A battery stores that surplus and returns it when demand rises.

  1. Step 1

    Charge when power is plentiful

    When sun and wind are strong and demand is low, the 200 MW battery charges from the grid instead of that energy going unused.

  2. Step 2

    Hold it ready

    It stores 400–600 MWh, held in reserve until South Australia needs it most.

  3. Step 3

    Release at the peak

    In the evening peak, or when the wind drops, it returns that energy to the grid for 2 to 3 hours at full power.

Bungama West BESS is at Bungama, just east of Port Pirie in South Australia’s Mid North. The site sits north of Warnertown Road and just west of Pirie Blocks Road, on freehold land owned outright by Risen Energy Australia.
